- Where did you find your van? We found it on craigslist.org. We had been watching for awhile and had seen a fair number of campervans (mostly old VWs). Those were a bit too much of a project for us. This van was owned by an older gentleman who couldn’t travel anymore and was looking to sell. He was the only owner in the vehicle’s 25 year history.
- What are the specifics of the van? It’s a 1982 Dodge B-250 van. It had a Sportsmobile penthouse conversion added to it almost immediately after purchase. It’s got a 318 cubic in. V-8 motor and an extended body chassis. The camping conversion has a 29 gallon fresh-water tank, a sink with 25 gallon gray-water tank, and a toilet with 30 gallon black-water tank. It also has a 36 gallon gas tank.
- What are some of the projects you’ve got planned? Well, one of the first things we’re going to have to do is engineer a bed. The Sportsmobile conversion has a “penthouse top” which is designed to have a bed in the upper, pop-up part of the van. That bed either never existed or was discarded somewhere along the way. Jay wants a super, duper media center with GPS, Rockbox media player, and laptop integration.
