Day 15 – 12/31/2007

Picacho Peak State Park (Arizona) to River View RV Park (Texas)

Day 15 – Our cat has sent word that she likes it at the Grandparents house more than at ours. (Something about wet cat-food, sleeping in the garage, and all the pets and attention she can handle.) We believe that the cat is being brainwashed, and must rescue her. For that reason, we have undertaken a speedy retreat to Florida. Today we drove a punishing 475 miles (171 out of Arizona, 164 through New Mexico, and 140 into Texas). We hit I-10, and just kept going….

There’s really nothing except some mountain ranges.  I-10 is a boring, but relatively easy to drive.  Not a lot of traffic to navigate.  You have to keep an eye on the gas gauge and watch gas prices.  Outside of the “major” towns, the gas prices go up substantially ($.20-$.30/gallon) and when you’ve got a 36 gallon tank, that makes a difference.

We stopped for the night at River View RV park in Van Horn, TX.  There aren’t any state parks near I-10 in this part of TX, so we had to go with a commercial park.  At $25 a night, we were highly disappointed.  The bathrooms smelled pretty bad, although they did have nice locking doors on the showers.  The spaces were crowded together and a good portion of them didn’t appear to have working electric.  It’s right by the interstate (as most commercial RV parks seem to be) so you got the freeway noise.  At least it wasn’t crowded, so we picked a spot far away enough from other rigs that we didn’t have neighbors peering in our windows.  But, all in all, I’d much rather my money go to support state parks then places like this.
